“Tight Knit” Folklore Studies Documentary Film

As the final research assignment for ASIA 495: Folk Cultures in the Asian Diaspora, we were asked to think of an item of folklore that is present in our own lives, or the lives of those around us, and create a documentary about it. I chose knitting (and other related or similar fibre arts). The documentary was constructed according to folklorist codes of conduct and direct, respectful research & documentation of folklore from knitting community consultants.

Luckily, I have some video production experience, but this was a new challenge: Being as we were in the first phase of the 2020 pandemic lockdown at the time of the project, I had to conduct my interviews remotely through video call, and was limited in recording equipment.

All consultants were provided with a contract ensuring the responsibilities and intents of the folklorist (me), and giving them full right to view the documentary and make any final suggestions or requests for changes.

I was lucky enough that so many members of my family qualified as consultants for this activity, so I did not struggle to find willing participants. In fact, I interviewed more consultants than needed for a 5 minute video, and sadly had to turn some willing participants away.

Because I had about 6+ hours of content, and a 5 minute video to make, I made a 15 minute director's cut as well.

Enjoy!
